{"id":9044,"date":"2021-12-03T15:07:32","date_gmt":"2021-12-03T15:07:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifpma.flywheelsites.com\/news\/global-pharmaceutical-industry-leaders-meet-with-uk-prime-minister-to-discuss-leadership-in-global-health-and-innovation\/"},"modified":"2023-01-25T13:33:09","modified_gmt":"2023-01-25T12:33:09","slug":"global-pharmaceutical-industry-leaders-meet-with-uk-prime-minister-to-discuss-leadership-in-global-health-and-innovation","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.ifpma.org\/news\/global-pharmaceutical-industry-leaders-meet-with-uk-prime-minister-to-discuss-leadership-in-global-health-and-innovation\/","title":{"rendered":"Global pharmaceutical industry leaders meet with UK Prime Minister to discuss leadership in global health and innovation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"intro\"><b>Y<\/b>esterday, global leaders from the pharmaceutical industry met with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/boris-johnson_today-i-met-virtually-with-ceos-from-some-activity-6872189294476312576-kR7e\/\">Prime Minister<\/a>, senior UK Cabinet Ministers and the NHS Chief Executive, to discuss global health and innovation.<\/p>\n<p>Their discussions focused on how the industry and UK Government can work together to drive pharmaceutical innovation and rapidly deliver the next generation of medicines to patients worldwide, and deliver on the ambition of the UK Government\u2019s Life Sciences Vision.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the industry\u2019s leading biopharmaceutical industry CEOs participated together with global, European and UK industry bodies who represent a global industry that employs 2 million employees worldwide and invests \u00a35bn per year in R&amp;D activities in the UK alone \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/economy\/governmentpublicsectorandtaxes\/researchanddevelopmentexpenditure\/bulletins\/businessenterpriseresearchanddevelopment\/2020\">more than any other secto<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/economy\/governmentpublicsectorandtaxes\/researchanddevelopmentexpenditure\/bulletins\/businessenterpriseresearchanddevelopment\/2020\">r.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The global health topics discussed included an assessment of current threat posed by the Omicron Variant, and progress in developing vaccines and therapeutics to further defend against COVID-19 and preparing for future pandemics (<a href=\"http:\/\/ifpma.org\/news\/biopharmaceutical-industry-collaborates-on-the-implementation-of-the-g7-100-days-mission-to-improve-readiness-for-future-pandemics\/\"><em>Statement on 100 Days Mission report<\/em><\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0 Innovation was a central theme of the exchanges.\u00a0 Discussions covered topics such as the role the biopharmaceutical sector innovations play in supporting the economic and health system recovery, and steps to accelerate pharmaceutical innovation and rapidly deliver the next generation of medicines to patients in the UK and worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting also focused on delivering the ambition set out in the UK Government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/life-sciences-vision\">Life Sciences Vision<\/a>, including the Prime Minister\u2019s Health Care Missions, the importance of shaping global regulatory standards and championing gold standard intellectual property provisions worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>At the conclusion of the meeting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/boris-johnson_today-i-met-virtually-with-ceos-from-some-activity-6872189294476312576-kR7e\/\">P<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/boris-johnson_today-i-met-virtually-with-ceos-from-some-activity-6872189294476312576-kR7e\/\">M Boris Johnson thanked the CEOs<\/a> for their innovations and underscored the vital role of partnership between government, industry and science to jointly tackle healthcare challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The biopharmaceutical industry representatives made the following statements:<\/p>\n<p>BCR Chairman, Jean-Christophe Tellier and IFPMA President &amp; Chief Executive Officer &amp; Chairman of the Executive Committee, UCB said: \u00a0<em>\u201cThe BCR meeting in London provided an important opportunity to recognise the critical role that the UK plays in global health and in the discovery of new medicines and vaccines. The sector wants to support the UK Government to deliver on our shared ambitions. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSupporting the economic and health system recovery, <\/em><em>while ensuring UK patients benefit from latest innovation. The UK Government has been a critical voice in maintaining Intellectual Property protection for medicines and vaccines.
