The global burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs)—which include diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, lung disease, mental health disorders, and neurological conditions—poses a critical challenge to people living with NCDs, health systems, economies, and societies worldwide.

On 1 May 2025, Foreign Policy and the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA) hosted an in-person, high-profile discussion on global commitments to combat NCDs. Building on previous discussions at the Global NCD Alliance Forum and IFPMA’s “From Innovation to Access” event, this gathering explored how focusing on innovation, mobilizing investment, driving implementation, and ensuring accountability can catalyze cross-sector collaboration and deliver tangible progress.

This event served as a critical prelude to the UN’s multi-stakeholder hearings on May 2 and the UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on NCDs and mental health in September. It brought together government officials, industry leaders, investors, healthcare professionals, civil society representatives, and multilateral organizations to coordinate concrete action plans to address the global burden of these diseases.

Scientific progress and advances in medical innovation are transforming how we prevent, treat and cure disease or help solve today’s biggest health challenges. These advances have been enabled by a strong innovation ecosystem, public-private partnerships, and joint action to ensure they translate into better health outcomes for people, globally.

On the sidelines of the World Health Assembly in May 2025 (#WHA78), this event brought together leaders and health experts, as well as industry innovators to explore how health – a key driver for economic prosperity and national security – can remain a strategic priority through collaborative action and political leadership.

From developing innovative medicines and vaccines to driving initiatives that support equitable access, the pharmaceutical industry is a critical private sector stakeholder committed to addressing the global NCDs burden and improving health everywhere.

On 11 March, IFPMA is hosting an in-person event in New York to launch our non-communicable disease (NCDs) “Call to Action.”  This is an important milestone ahead of the UN High-Level Meting on NCDs and Mental Health taking place later this year.

The global burden of NCDs – which include diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, lung disease, mental health, and neurological disorders – presents a critical challenge to patients, health systems, economies, and societies worldwide, and the UN High-Level Meeting is expected to result in a Political Declaration to drive global progress to tackle this rising global health challenge.

This event will be a platform for cross-sectoral engagement among leaders from governments, the private sector, academia, and civil society to highlight actionable pathways to progress and goal-setting for NCDs and Universal Health Coverage (UHC) – through 2030 and with a vision to 2050. It will include a series of keynotes and panel discussions followed by a networking reception.
